Our History
North Star Montessori was founded in 2001 by teachers and parents interested in providing an authentic Montessori environment for children in Bartholomew County and surrounding areas.  North Star Montessori (NSM) is a not for profit, 501(c)3 corporation and is guided by a Board of Trustees.  NSM is focused on providing quality educational experiences, based on the teachings of Dr. Maria Montessori and best practices of education, to children ages 6 weeks to 12 years.
Our Mission
North Star Montessori School strives to
  • provide a warm, caring community committed to the development of the whole child
  • employ an integrated approach to learning and living based on the Montessori philosophy of education and human development
  • celebrate the unique gifts and perspectives within each member of our community
  • attend equally to the education of the heart as well as the mind
  • motivate children to become confident, competent, creative life-long learners
  • promote peace
  • encourage children to live their lives as joyful contributors to society, compassionate global citizens and committed caretakers of the earth.
Our Vision
North Star Montessori will continue to provide excellent education in an environment where children effectively and independently pursue developmentally appropriate and academically fulfilling learning, in community with others. We will prepare a diverse body of students for their places as stewards of our planet, trustees who serve our communities and leaders in our global economy. Our methodology will blend Montessori methods and the best practices available in education.
Our vibrant school community will be a magnet that draws people in. People attracted to our school will be able to participate in it and be transformed in the process. Our school will offer beautiful indoor environments with extensions to the natural environment. We will have strong infant, toddler, primary, and elementary programs that are culture-rich, locally rooted, globally aware, environmentally responsible, and inclusive. Without compromising our Montessori values, we will strive to meet the needs of the families in our community so that children from diverse backgrounds can fully participate in our programs. Our school will nurture students, staff, teachers, and parents physically, intellectually, emotionally, and socially.
We will focus on what we have in common while respecting our differences to truly learn the meaning of service together.
We will support positive relationships among current students, graduates, and their families. Our faculty and staff will love to work here. Our fully engaged and dedicated Board of Trustees will govern effectively. Because we will be financially secure and stable in terms of staff and programs, we will be able to provide financial aid to families who need it and to secure opportunities for any interested families in our community to participate in our programs. Students will typically remain at North Star Montessori School from early childhood through elementary (grade 6).  Our adherence to Montessori traditions in a modern context will make us an inspiring example to other schools in our community.
